Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach thinks the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will happen. I agree. And when it does boxing fans should thank Shane Mosley's right hand for making the fight a reality. In this writer's view Pacquiao's sudden amenability to additional blood testing is directly related to round two of Mayweather-Mosley when Mosley's right hand exposed a chink in Mayweather's armor . . .
Try not to laugh as you read this, but Paul Williams insists he won legitimately when he was granted a technical decision victory over Kermit Cintron despite the bout having ended with only three rounds completed. Yes, according to the California commission Williams won because the fourth round of the bout had started when Cintron was injured. But c'mon. How can Williams seriously believe he defeated anyone Saturday night? The judges at ringside may have awarded Williams the victory, but those of us judging the fight at home scored it a No Contest. I'd much rather have Williams and his promoter Dan Goossen come clean and say something similar to the following: "Sure you want to see a rematch, but it's not going to happen. We got the win, which is all that matters. We only accepted this dangerous fight because HBO demanded it. Why play with fire again? We want Mayweather or Pacquiao and the big money that comes with it" . . . Yeah, I know I'm dreaming . . .
The Nationals have won eight one-run games this season, which is a little less than half of their 18 victories overall. The Nats can thank closer Matt Capps for their success rate in close games. Capps leads the major leagues in saves with 13 . . .
I enjoyed watching Braden pitch his perfect game --even though his first name is Dallas . . .
Seattle Mariners OF Ken Griffey, Jr. was unable to pinch hit recently because he was catching z's in the clubhouse. Apparently Griffey went back to the clubhouse to get a jacket and never returned. He was found in the seventh inning asleep in a chair . . . I guess I really can't criticize Junior since I once nodded off while sitting ringside at a world title fight . . .
Somehow the Pittsburgh Pirates have managed to remain in fourth place in the NL Central despite owning the worst run differential in the major leagues at -83. The next worst differential is owned by the Houston Astros at -61. Yet, despite having a 22-run advantage in run differential over the Pirates, the Astros are the team in last place in the NL Central . . .
ESPN New York imagined a best-of-seven series between the ALL-Yankee team and the ALL-Red Sox team. Not surprisingly the Yanks won in six games . . .
The Yankees could have used a few of those ALL-Yankee team members last night as they lost their second straight game, a 5-4 decision to the Detroit Tigers . . . I believe " Touché" was the word Johnny Damon was mouthing as he circled the bases yesterday after homering against his former club . . .
Nice job by the Red Sox last night, knocking off the Toronto Blue Jays in game 1 of their series. Toronto had won eight of their last 10 games. Of course Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow deserves some of the credit for the Sox's win, having set a team record by walking five batters in one inning . . .
